Tonia Aitken

Hello and a warm welcome

I am a Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapy practitioner. Though I work with people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, I have particular interest in supporting people struggling with relationship problems, and those going through bereavement and loss.

A little about me

Being an older woman, I have a wealth of life experience and the wisdom that comes with that. I have enjoyed several careers in my time; charity worker, primary school teacher, bespoke jewellery maker and artist, and psychotherapist, which I came to later in life. My husband and I own and run a small health club in which I have been teaching Pilates and fitness since 2005. My love of exercise and outdoor pursuits has led me to adopt a broad, holistic view of health where mind and body are intrinsically connected.

My approach to psychotherapy

I passionately believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship to create personal growth and positive change in people’s lives. I have experienced this for myself in my own personal therapy, and am privileged to have witnessed it happening repeatedly and consistently in my work as a therapist with clients. Put simply, I see the business of psychotherapy is in helping people:

“deal with the pain of the past in the present so that they are free to live their lives in the future.”

(European Association for Transactional Analysis)

As well as my training and experience, I bring my natural intuition and curiosity into the therapy room, focussing on helping you understand yourself and your relationships better. I offer a compassionate, non-judgemental, safe and totally confidential space for us to work together to explore what may be going on behind the difficult emotions, thoughts and behaviours troubling you.

I completed my 4 year Advanced Training in TA Psychotherapy – Advanced Dip. TA (psych) at Iron Mill College, Exeter.
As well as working in private practice in Exeter city centre, I have worked at DCCP, The Dartmoor Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy in Newton Abbot since 2021.

I am a member of The United Kingdom Association for Transactional Analysis (UKATA), The International Association of Relational Transactional Analysis (IARTA) and a trainee member of UKCP working towards accreditation. I adhere to their ethical guidelines.

I welcome face-to-face appointments at the PAC rooms in central Exeter, and also offer therapy online via Zoom.

Please email to arrange an initial low-cost 30-minute informal consultation.
